The Lovers (Sumatran Tigers), 2021, two color screen print with black line letterpress
The Lovers (Sumatran Tigers), a print edition with Mullowney Printing, is part of a larger Endangered Tarot series. Each work features a different Major Arcana card with its own endangered animal. The Lovers, the card of union, attraction, and choice, shows two Sumatran tigers, one cuddling the other. There are 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. Within 35 years, these animals—like their counterparts the Bengalese and Javan tigers—could easily end up extinct. The clearing of these tigers' habitat for palm oil and acacia plantations is the main reason for their decline. Marple started this series after working on the “Imagine Freedom: Artworks for Abolition” art auction benefiting Critical Resistance, after realizing that environmental and social justice were one-in-the-same fight—a fight to heal the deep wounds of the past and present, and to support life in all its diversity.
